Why Students Chose UH Hilo

Connect with people, place, and the planet.

Students come from around the world to study and connect with people, place, and the planet. You’ll learn what you can do and who you can become.

“Thanks to small class sizes, it was easy to build relationships with professors who take time to help you find your path. But it's not just on campus—the community around UH Hilo is incredibly strong, and the town takes so much pride in the university. You can't get that in many other places.”
Filippa Graneld, Environmental Science, ’24, from Stockholm, Sweden
“Growing up in rural Waimea, I saw the healthcare gap firsthand. I want to bridge Hawaiian medicine and Western medicine and give back to the community that raised me—the same place where I'm raising my two kids.”
Kiersten Lum, Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy, ’29, from Hawaiʻi Island
